The King Cake came to New Orleans from France in the 1870s and honors the three kings who visited the baby Jesus. A dried pea, coin or plastic baby, representing the Christ child, is hidden in the cake. Whoever finds the token in his or her piece will have a year of good luck. In some regions, the person who finds the token is treated like a King or Queen for the day and is obligated to provide the next King Cake. Shaped like a crown, the King Cake is decorated in the royal colors of purple, green and gold. Purple stands for justice, green for faith and gold for power.
